About Me

I am person who contains many multitudes. This website is my portfolio for my freelance writing and website work, but this is just one side of my life. I am also a writer, storyteller and poet, and a local activist for social justice & climate change resilience in my community.

Academic and work history

I was an A* student at school, going on to study the International Baccalaureate at Tauntons College in Southampton (studying English, History, Psychology, French, Biology, Maths, and Theory of Knowledge). I did my English Literature degree at Cardiff University 2009-2012 attaining a First, and completing a dissertation looking at the changing role of dragons across medieval and modern literature.

While at University I did a number of internships at marketing and PR agencies, landing me a job at a design agency in Basingstoke upon graduating. Being part of a small agency I got stuck into many roles from writing content for our own website and design blog, to running social media accounts for clients, to copywriting for clients of all business sizes (with the deadline of a page of content per hour), and project managing website projects from first contact all the way up to going live and completing updates and maintenance.

My next two roles were working in-house for large brands; Palgrave Macmillan and the University of Southampton. At Palgrave I managed 150 author websites, transitioning them into a new upgraded system in my time there. And I joined the University of Southampton as one of 3 copywriters hired to re-write the entirety of the university's website (more than 2500 pages of content).

You can read more about my work history on my LinkedIn page.

Since I became a parent in 2015 I have been freelancing as a copywriter and have increasingly been doing web design as well thanks to the incredibly useful updates to Wix and WordPress which help non-graphic designers to create professional looking websites. I have several case studies which showcase the kind of work that I have been doing recently with organisations such as Acorns Community Preschool, The Granary Creative Arts Centre, and The Totton and Eling Neighbourhood Plan.

Other roles

Writer, Poet, Activist

My great passion in life is for writing, and I love creative writing and expression most of all. Sadly, it's a hard profession for paying the bills which is why I worked hard to develop professional skills in copywriting, marketing and website work to support my writing and community work.

I write and perform stories and poetry (you can find me at Southampton Storytelling Club, and Moving Voices practicing my stuff). I have written plays and short stories, and I write essays and articles on issues that are close to my heart. I also run writing workshops, and have been a writer in residence at The Granary Creative Arts Centre.

Activism threads throughout everything I do in the way that I work, but I also volunteer time to organisations working to help environmental and social justice issues in my local area, including a recent stint working as a town councillor from 2019-2023 which was incredibly interesting and gave me great experience working with local authorities and larger organisations to facilitate community projects such as this Mural project at Totton Train Station.

Why work with me?

You can see from my potted history here that I am a highly intelligent and hard working individual. You can feel very confident about who you are dealing with, and the standards that I will hold myself to. I am by definition a very principled person; I work with boundaries, with transparency, with integrity and efficiency. I have a consistent track record, and the type of person that I am means that I really care about the people that I work with and creating something with you that feels true to you. What I really enjoy about copywriting is that I get to understand your story and your ideas and to help you to condense it into a clear message that is consistent throughout your website and branding.
